07 — Image / Text / Leporello

Photography does not always remain a single image.

In my collaborations with the poet Vahé Godel, the photograph enters another space: that of the artist’s book and, particularly, the leporello.

The folding structure allows an image to be encountered gradually. It may appear, disappear, continue across a fold or enter into relation with another image. Reading and looking no longer occur separately; they unfold together through time and through the physical movement of opening the book.

In these works, the photographic image does not illustrate the poem, nor does the poem explain the photograph. Each retains its autonomy while creating a space between image and word, visibility and language, silence and reading.

The analogue photographs become part of a larger object — printed, folded, sequenced and handled. Photography therefore moves beyond the individual print and becomes a form of spatial and temporal construction.

The leporello is not simply a support for the photograph. It becomes part of the way the photograph is seen.
