Within IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE, Wattana Kaewdoungyai’s Awakening reconfigures the Thai classical mask as both image and consciousness. Emerging from a geometric threshold, the Khon visage appears suspended between sacred tradition and inner vision—its gaze both watchful and introspective.

As the final successor of the lineage of “Phra Thepyon,” Wattana carries forward the precision and spiritual discipline of royal craftsmanship while transposing it into contemporary painting. Here, the mask is no longer solely an object of performance, but a mental image in transformation—interwoven with natural elements such as water, lotus, and ephemeral life forms.

Guided by the concept of impermanence, the work unfolds as a meditation on the cyclical nature of existence. The image arises, stabilizes, and dissolves—inviting the viewer into a contemplative space where seeing becomes an act of awareness, and the visible reveals the continuous flow between being and becoming.
