IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE

An International Contemporary Art Exhibition

Thailand – Switzerland

IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE is a bilateral contemporary art exhibition bringing together 22 artists10 from Thailand and 12 from Switzerland—to explore the relationship between sensory perception and the mental image.

Presented at the National Gallery, Bangkok, in July 2027, the exhibition will feature approximately 60 artworks, including painting, drawing, photography, installation, video, sound, and performance.

Through diverse artistic practices, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how images emerge between perception, memory, imagination, and thought, opening a dialogue between Eastern and Western perspectives on the nature of seeing.

Curatorial Introduction

IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE emerges as an inquiry into the conditions through which images come into being—before they are seen, as they are perceived, and after they dissolve into memory. Situated at the threshold between interiority and exteriority, the exhibition proposes a space where the image is no longer understood as a fixed representation, but as a dynamic process that oscillates between mind and matter.

Bringing together artists from Thailand and Switzerland, IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE extends beyond the framework of a conventional exhibition. It unfolds as a field of relations, where cultural, perceptual, and conceptual differences are not resolved but activated. Within this shared space, the encounter between distinct artistic practices becomes a generative condition, allowing meanings to emerge through dialogue, translation, and transformation.

At the core of the exhibition lies a fundamental question:

How does thought become visible, and how does vision itself become a mode of thinking?

The works presented here do not merely illustrate ideas; they materialize processes of perception, memory, and imagination. Through painting, drawing, photography, installation, video, sound, and performance, the participating artists give form to what is often intangible—transforming inner images into sensory experience while simultaneously destabilizing the boundaries between the visible and the invisible.

The notion of the mental image is approached not as a singular or stable entity, but as something fluid, contingent, and continually shifting. It is shaped by personal memory, cultural context, and the temporal nature of perception itself. Each artwork therefore becomes a site of negotiation, where inner and outer realities intersect, overlap, and sometimes contradict one another.

Likewise, the sensible image resists the notion of pure objectivity. What is seen is never neutral; it is always mediated by the body, lived experience, and the structures through which perception is organised. The exhibition therefore invites viewers to reconsider seeing—not as passive observation, but as an active and interpretative act in which meaning is continually constructed.

Within this expanded field, uncertainty becomes a productive condition. Rather than resolving ambiguity, the works sustain it, allowing images to remain open, unstable, and continually in transformation. This openness reflects a broader understanding of contemporary artistic practice as a space where established categories dissolve and new forms of knowledge emerge through sensory and experiential engagement.

The bilateral dialogue between Thailand and Switzerland further enriches this investigation. Rather than presenting two fixed cultural identities, the exhibition foregrounds an ongoing process of movement, reinterpretation, and exchange. Cultural references are displaced, recontextualised, and transformed, giving rise to hybrid forms and unexpected connections.

In this way, IMAGO SENSIBILIS / IMAGE MENTALE does not propose a single narrative or unified perspective. Instead, it constructs a constellation of artistic positions, each artwork functioning as a point of entry into a broader investigation of how images inhabit both the mind and the world.

Ultimately, the exhibition suggests that images are not simply objects of vision, but events of perception—moments in which sensation, thought, memory, and imagination converge. It is within this convergence that the image becomes both a question and a possibility: something continually forming, dissolving, and reforming at the limits of what can be perceived and what can be imagined.
